A note from the musicians:

Time and time again, we find ourselves looking to our elders for guidance and inspiration, so in this project we decided to draw directly from some of our musical elders, namely Alice Coltrane and Ornette Coleman. On this album, as in performance, we interspersed these elders’ compositions with our own composed and improvised material, seeking to embody the openness and creative spirit that they represent. We related to this music and to each other as a way through emotionally trying times. After two years developing routine and ritual, this recording found us in a time of transition -- Josh was preparing to move out of Michigan into the unknown of Chicago, and Peter had nearly completed his formal musical studies and was preparing for his next steps. This music reflects some of that turmoil in its dynamic energy, but ultimately we present this as a soothing offering. Josh’s piece “Grief” was composed in a similar vein: it is only about negativity, sadness, fear, and anger in the sense that the processing of those feelings can be a healing and positive force. In other words, as the cliche goes, lights shine brightest in the dark. We hope this music is a light for you in the darkness of our present moment of global uncertainty.

Here is some wisdom from Alice Coltrane.

“We go forward and we meet with all kinds of situations and circumstances. So the situation may be nice, others are challenging, others are presenting you with quite a task, and some of them are very opposed to what your considerations are... move through that, just as we go through life we face our changes, but we work through them.”
